Breaking Free of the Bionic Myth
Because we live in a society that values activity (male/yang energy) more than rest (female/yin energy), we are not supported to adjust our schedules and routines to accommodate changes in our cycles. We are expected to keep going as though we were bionic, as though our cycles didn’t even exist!
This archaic and detrimental belief system has hurt men as well as women. Even though men don’t have menstrual cycles, they experience hormonal changes throughout their lives and are affected by lunar cycles due to the high water composition of the body.
The cost of this bionic lifestyle is high and can manifest as chronic fatigue, depression, severe weight fluctuations, accelerated aging, and illness. Here are some tips to help you avoid this plight.
Allow yourself to rest. Don’t force your body to keep going when it is begging for rest. A 15-minute cat nap during the day can be extremely restorative.
Wean yourself off of stimulants such as caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and refined sugar and carbs. Even though they give you a hit of energy, it’s artificial. Stimulants create longterm damage to your adrenals and drain your energy reserves. If you’ve developed an addiction to any of these, get help from a health professional and/or therapist.
Spend time in nature. Connecting with nature helps you connect with yourself. The Earth is the Mother Goddess!
Do yoga to calm your nervous system. Other benefits include enhanced intuition, mental clarity, energy, and flexibility.
Stop people-pleasing. Trying to meet everybody’s expectations of you takes the focus off of what you need and makes you feel depleted and resentful.
Eat small nutritious meals consisting of healthy proteins, vegetables, fruits, and grains throughout the day. This will help maintain your blood sugar and give your body a constant source of fuel. If you’re craving junk food, you’re probably stressed out, overworked, and due for some downtime and a cleanse.
Practice belly breathing. Stop periodically and notice how you’re breathing. Take full deep breaths all the way down into your belly, so you feel it expanding as you breathe in.
Examine at the emotional patterns underlying your bionic behavior. Is it perfectionism, a need to prove you’re good enough, a fear about money, buried grief? Address these with a therapist and/or coach so they no longer run you.
