When I go through periods where I spend too much time indoors, I get unbearably cranky. I start feeling fidgety, depressed, and creatively frustrated. Some days I don’t realize how lack of sunlight is affecting me until I go outside and feel the healing balm of the sun’s rays.

One of my clients recently confessed to me that she had pushed herself to the brink. She had just returned from a whirlwind business trip, and when she got home she could do nothing but lie in bed for several days. I told her that this was a classic sign of being in an exhaustion-exertion cycle.

Many of my friends and clients have been telling me that they’ve been experiencing some wacky energy lately. I certainly have been feeling it. The word “holiday” is derived from holy day – a day of solemn religious observance. Over the millennia, its true meaning has become grossly distorted. Today the word is synonymous with shopping frenzies, insincere displays of emotion, and, in many instances, obligatory and uncomfortable social gatherings. There is an underlying pressure to conform that can be psychologically detrimental if we fall prey to it. Instead of feeling uplifted and joyful, many people feel anxious and depressed.

1. Meditate on the personal meaning of the concept of holiday (holy day) and what it means to you. Plan and schedule your activities in alignment with that.
